NIAW – Knowing Your Options

by | April 23rd, 2014

It’s National Infertility Awareness Week! YAY!

Struggling with fertility is hard, especially if you have no clue where to even begin. If you are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for a year with no success, you should visit a fertility specialist. If you are over 35 and have been trying to conceive, you should come in after six months.

What happens when you visit one of our doctors?

The initial new patient consult with a doctor includes a comprehensive infertility evaluation including a discussion with the doctor, vaginal ultrasound and possible blood work. At this time, you will make a plan with the doctor for your treatment. This visit can usually be billed to insurance as diagnostic testing depending on your insurance. If you have more questions about insurance coverage, please contact our office at 817-348-8145.

Treatment Plans

Here is the good news: There are plenty of treatment options available to you and our renowned physicians, along with our team of medical staff, are here to help you pick the best one.

At Fort Worth Fertility we offer:

Tubal Reversals

Fibroid removal surgery

Interuterine Inseminations (IUI)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

Egg Freezing

Ovulation Induction

Egg Donation

Donor Insemination

Surrogacy

The two most popular options are IUI and IVF.

An IUI is usually recommended for couples that have ovulation problems, mild male factor infertility, unexplained infertility or failed natural cycles with medication.

The process for an IUI includes close monitoring of the female patient to time when the patient will ovulate. The male patient then comes in and gives a sample (a frozen sample can be used as well) which is washed down to get only the most active and motile sperm in a high concentration. This sperm is then placed in the uterus as close to the tubal opening as possible.

IVF was originally recommended for women who had tubal disease and could not conceive naturally. Now IVF can be helpful for women  who have PCOS or endometriosis, male factor infertility and couples who have not had success with other treatments.

The process of IVF involves retrieving the eggs from the female partner (or donor), getting a sample of the sperm from the male partner (or donor) and combining the two to create the embryo. The embryo is then implanted into the uterus after growing to blastocyst (day 6) stage.

The best way to decide what course of treatment you should use is of course to come see a physician. Our front desk staff is more than happy to help set up an initial consultation with either Dr. Kaufmann or Dr. Elkins.
